Financial Fundamentals Level I (or "Dollars and Sense") is a 10 week, 40 hour Workplace Education program designed to deliver the basic hands on financial knowledge of operating a small business, and one that every business owner will want to have under their belt. Starting with key accounting terminology, you will be led step-by-step through the basics of the financial aspect of your business. In addition to understanding bookkeeping basics, you will be able to read, analyze and make financial decisions based on your company’s financial statements as well as know what needs to be done to comply with government reporting requirements.

Participants will be provided with hands on opportunities to complete reports and forms required by our Government using sample cases to provide different scenarios. To stay viable today a business has to plan, therefore we will prepare budgets and cash flow forecasts.

Topics to be covered include:
  • The Basics And Definitions
  • Concepts of Bookkeeping
  • Home Office and Vehicle Use
  • Budgets and Cash Flow Projections
  • Basic Business Taxation
  • Pricing Strategy
  • Financial Statements
  • Government Reporting Requirements
  • Basic Financial Analysis

Start Date: Thursday, September 25, 2025
Time: 8:30am-12:30pm

Classes will occur every Thursday for 10 weeks.

There are additional requirements for the Zoom online programs, as follows: the program must be taken on a computer, laptop, or tablet; phones will not be an accepted device. Participants must have a high speed Internet connection (no dial up), and hardwired is preferred to wi-fi. A headset or earbuds must be used, and the participant must have a webcam if there is no camera in their laptop, with the camera left on. Video participation is a requirement to ensure the connection to the instructor and other participants. A quiet place to focus is also required, free from distractions.
These details will be discussed as part of the INA process.

Registration is not confirmation of acceptance in the program; you will be contacted as to your status after an individual needs assessment, and no later than September 18, 2025.

"The Financial Fundamentals/Dollars and Sense course is an absolute must for all business owners.  It helped me understand my financials better, prepare and store all my source documents exactly how the government would like, and also taught me what to look for to support the growth of my business.  The instructor Lynn MacKinnon was incredible and it was a fantastic opportunity to network with other local business owners."  Tina McAulay, Solasta Lighting

TESTIMONIALS

I recently attended a Sage 50, 40 hour course being facilitated by Chris Lewis of Chris Lewis Business Solutions. Located and sponsored through NOBL and CBDC New Glasgow.
I found the course and content to be very useful to me in a way that gave me the confidence to start a business plan for a small business in Bookkeeping.
Chris Lewis is very knowledgeable in the field of accounting and business and facilitated the program very well and professional. He gave more than anticipated tips and tricks of the trade which will also be very useful to me being new to the business world.
It is a great opportunity in my opinion to attend such courses being offered; especially for free. These courses can run you anywhere from $1500 to $2500 depending on the institution. I would like to attend more courses like this to keep my skills up to date and to gain more knowledge of the business world.
